Public participation in design issues is becoming more relevant today than ever, in the light of the increasing complexity and uncertainty of contemporary problems stemming from the rapid social, economic, cultural, environmental, technological and other developments forming new landscapes, within which planning decisions are made. To address the complexity and uncertainty, participatory design approaches are constantly gaining ground and exploiting a wide range of design problems at various spatial scales.
Open Data, and in particular Open Government Data, is a huge source of data that has yet to be exploited. Many individuals and organizations collect a wide range of different types of data in order to accomplish their tasks. Government data is particularly important in this respect, both because of its quantity and universality and because it is legally public data and could therefore be open and available to others to use.
